If I Breathe I Fall Asleep $15.99 The debut album by Baltimore indie kids Avec recalls a time roughly a decade prior to their own, an era between the twin poles of grunge and nu-metal when a generation of young women fronted tough-cookie guitar bands. If I Breathe I Fall Asleep mixes Shawna Potter’s whisper-to-a-yelp vocals with a similarly dynamic strain of pop-oriented, emo-tinged indie rock. It’s an appealing sound: Potter’s a good-to-great singer whose closest point of comparison is probably Helium’s Mary Timony, and she and lead guitarist Brooks Harlan know their way around the blend of My Bloody Valentine-style single-note drones and big riffs ? la Smashing Pumpkins that defined indie rock circa 1994 or so. Two problems, however: Harlan’s occasional lead vocals are no more welcome than D’Arcy’s were in the Pumpkins, and the songwriting lacks the big hooks that would really put the tunes over. The one exception is the terrific, sexually charged opener “While You’re Down There,” a frustrated pop/rock winner that features both Potter and Harlan at their respective best. Come to think of it, most of those old alt rock bands only had one really great song, too, so the resemblance comes full circle. ~ Stewart Mason |

Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture, Vol. 1 [PA] $15.99 Wu-Tang Clan: GZA, Masta Killa, RZA, U-God.Personnel: Aesop Rock, MF Doom.Producer: RZACompilation Producer: Dreddy Kruger.Audio Mixer: Jose “Choco” Reynoso.Recording information: 36 Chambers Studio, New York, NY.It’s taken a while for the Wu-Tang Clan to re-build the steam they had in the early 1990s, but this intriguing project, which pairs members of the Clan with underground hip-hop luminaries such as Aesop Rock, MF Doom, Sean P., Del tha Funky Homosapien, and others, should help the cause. Conceived by Wu cohort Dreddy Kruger, and with production from the RZA and new Wu producer Bronze Nazareth, among others, this is partially a family affair, and the classic Wu feel is all over these tracks–complete with spare yet high-minded beats and eerie loops. But it’s the rotating roster of MCs that really makes this disc, with surprising pairings like Aesop Rock and Del tha Funky Homosapien on “Preservation,” and the GZA and Rass Kass on “Versus” (one of the album’s highlights). “Biochemical Equation” boasts a killer beat from the RZA, who also takes the mic to trade rhymes with MF Doom. A tribute to deceased Wu-Tang member Old Dirty Bastard evokes the ghost of the original Clan, but the overall flavor here is contemporary and fresh, with undercurrents of the classic sound that brought the original ruckus so many years ago. |

Real Ghosts Caught On Tape [LP] $13.98 As the ringleader of Fake Problems, Chris Farren strikes more than a few similarities to Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst, particularly in the way both songwriters mix emo with traces of alt-country. Real Ghosts Caught on Tape seriously downplays the twang of Farren’s other albums, though, replacing it with a new emphasis on buoyant pop and the sort of energetic, heartland punk-rock championed by the Gaslight Anthem. This is still the Farren show, but kudos also go to producer Ted Hutt, the same man who recorded Gaslight Anthem’s two breakthrough albums. Hutt knows how to couch his clients’ punk tendencies in other genres, from Gaslight’s Springsteen-styled anthems to Flogging Molly’s Celtic workouts, and he does the same to Real Ghosts. With its cowpunk guitars, `60s pop harmonies, and indie rock chord progressions, this is essentially a tour through all of Fake Problems’ influences, and a fairly tuneful tour at that. ~ Andrew Leahey |

You Can’t Take It with You [Bonus Tracks] [LP] $18.98 As Tall As Lions made a late-’00s splash on the indie music scene with a sound characterized by Coldplay-esque melodicism, U2-ish ethereal guitar textures, and the supple, soaring, Jeff Buckley-influenced lead vocals of singer Dan Nigro. On YOU CAN”T TAKE IT WITH YOU, the Long Island-based group continued in much the same vein as on its 2006 self-titled release, matching the above-mentioned sonic palette with kinetic drum `n bass beats and heaping helpings of old fashioned rock energy. Sounding at once accessible and inscrutably mysterious, “In Case of Rapture” bristles with a nervous energy that should please emo fans, but remains densely textured enough to appeal to listeners with an ear for the progressive. “Circles” starts out softly melancholy, with a vocal that recalls Art Garfunkel or Elliot Smith, before eventually exploding into a guitar freakout underpinned by tense, wiry, claustrophobic rhythms. Throughout, YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU represents the sound of a band striking a delicate balance between emotional directness and artful experimentation. |

Read Music/Speak Spanish [LP] $19.98 Desaparecidos: Conor Oberst (vocals, guitar); Landon Hedges (guitar, bass); Denver Dalley (guitar); Ian McElroy (keyboards); Matt Baum (drums). With Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst wears his languishing heart on his sleeve, channeling his most personal emotions via intense acoustic-based indie rock. The talented young songwriter seems ready to burst out into something noisier, and he gets that chance with Desaparecidos. On Read Music/Speak Spanish, the band rocks out with more of an emo edge, typified by blaring guitars and raging vocals. With fellow Omaha guitarist/songwriter Denver Dalley, bassist Landon Hedges, keyboardist Ian McElroy, and drummer Matt Baum (Baum and McElroy have toured with Bright Eyes, while Hedges plays in labelmate the Good Life), the group critiques American materialism and consumerism. Songs such as “Greater Omaha” and “Mall of America” resonate with sincerity, while Oberst’s vocals quiver and scream about money and society. With such a convincing voice, there’s never a time when his lyrics are less than earnest. This debut full-length was recorded in one week, which, as a result, adds to its unabashed rawness. ~ Kenyon Hopkin |

Somebody’s Gonna Miss Us $13.99 Personnel: Mike Golla (guitar, background vocals); Matt Watts (guitar); Brian Schmutz (keyboards, background vocals). With emo/pop-punkers the Starting Line on “indefinite hiatus” by 2009 (so its members could either exercise their creative muscles in other projects or focus on family matters), what better time to issue a double-disc, “best-of” live recording? The first disc of Somebody’s Gonna Miss Us contains in-concert renditions of all of the group’s favorites; the second disc of the set is a DVD documentary and also live performances — which results in a set that will be a treat for both the ears and eyes of fans. Name a favorite of the Starting Line, and by golly, you’ll find it here — including their breakthrough hit, “Bedroom Talk,” as well as the singles “Island,” “Something Left to Give,” and the set closer, “Best of Me.” And the documentary covers all the bases, from the group’s inception and getting signed to an indie, through their snafus with major labels, and ultimately, what may be their last-ever show. For longtime fans of the Starting Line, all aspects of their career thus far are touched upon and studied throughout Somebody’s Gonna Miss Us. ~ Greg Prato |

Magic Windows, Magic Nights [LP] $17.98 With a blend of lo-fi pop melody and guitar-centric indie rock, The Library Is on Fire’s second album, Magic Windows, Magic Nights, serves to remind us why we loved bands like Dinosaur Jr. and Guided by Voices so much in the first place, while putting a new enough spin on the sound that it doesn’t devolve into hero-worshipping mimicry. Considering that the album was recorded by GBV producer Todd Tobias at Waterloo Studios, giving the album its own voice while allowing it to pay tribute to its influences is no small feat. As with their debut, Cassette, this album finds frontman Steve Five still coming to grips with the 2004 loss of a dear friend, giving the album a heaviness that is both sonic and emotional. It’s that plaintive quality that makes Magic Windows such a striking album. Five manages to convey his loss, grief, and angst with an honesty that’s more raw and genuine than most of the so-called “emo” that’s floating around these days, without ever making the listener feel uncomfortable or voyeuristic. These aren’t the songs of someone who is falling apart, but rather the songs of someone who is coping. “Gilding the Lily” really demonstrates the melancholy dynamics at work on the album, where languid vocal melodies and waves of guitar co-exist in a breezy, slacker rock harmony, lazily rocking the listener while delivering bittersweet pop. All in all, Magic Windows, Magic Nights really finds The Library Is on Fire coming into their own as songwriters with an incredibly solid album that manages to evoke nostalgia for the old days of indie rock while feeling altogether new and interesting. ~ Gregory Heaney |

Sisters of the Red Death [LP] $11.98 If emo-rock has its own Led Zeppelin, it is surely Vendetta Red. In addition to curly-locked frontman Zach Davidson’s passing resemblance to a young Robert Plant, the Seattle group shares Led Zep’s penchant for monster guitar riffs and fantastical imagery (note SISTERS OF THE RED DEATH’s mythological album artwork). Vendetta Red is undoubtedly one of emo’s leading lights, and SISTERS reinforces that status with ambitious, anthemic tunes that shift deftly from catchy melodies to surging metallic interludes. |

Chasing Hamburg $14.99 Upon hearing the sophomore full-length by the Polar Bear Club, 2009’s Chasing Hamburg, it’s pretty darn hard to declare whether the group is a hardcore, punk, or emo band, the reason being that this New York-based group manages to incorporate elements from all three rock styles — hollered vocals, sticky sweet melodies, explosive and clashing riffs/beats, etc. The result is an approach that seems custom-made for widespread acceptance by the Warped Tour crowd, specifically such ditties as the hardcore/punk-ish “See the Wind,” and the more emo/alternative-tinged “Boxes” and “Song to Persona.” It’s becoming increasingly difficult in the early 21st century to determine pure hardcore bands, or those that base their sound on hardcore but also embrace emo melodicism. As evidenced by Chasing Hamburg, the Polar Bear Club certainly fit into the latter category. ~ Greg Prato |

Cartel $6.99 Full performer name: Cartel (Turkish Hip Hop)/Cartel (Emo). The sophomore album by this Atlanta-based quintet follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, CHROMA. Complete with high polish, guitar-driven rock songs, sprightly hooks, and emo sensibility, Cartel’s self-titled follow-up effort is a straightforward dose of punk-pop that manages to be reflective while still rocking out. The songwriting is sharper than on the band’s debut, and the album is likely to sell well given Cartel’s participation in MTV’s BAND IN A BUBBLE series. The show housed the band in a giant bubble for 22 days, where they were filmed writing and recording the album. CARTEL will give fans of the show, and the band, a chance to hear the results of that process in glorious high fidelity. |

Dune $22.99 Before becoming one of the biggest-selling acts in Japanese music, rockers L’Arc-en-Ciel were an early indie favorite in Osaka. With something of a new wave sound and a large helping of contemporary light rock, the band gained local success and released its debut, Dune. The album quickly shot to the top of the Oricon indie charts on the strength of singles like “Floods of Tears” and the band’s slightly synthesized sound and new wave look. The album was re-released in an anniversary edition in 2004 with an additional three tracks. ~ Adam Greenberg |

Are We Really Happy With Who We Are… [ECD] $9.99 Full title: Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now?.Moneen: Kenny Bridges, Chris “The Hippy” Hughes, Peter Krpan, Erik Hughes.Additional personnel: Chad Blinman (strings); Trever Keith (background vocals).Recorded at Audio International, Ojai, California; The Eyes Socket, Venice, California.Moneen: Chris ‘The Hippy’ Hughes, Kenny Bridges (guitar); Eric Hughes (bass guitar); Peter Krpan (drums).Personnel: Lisa Logutenkow, Trever Keith (background vocals).Additional personnel: Trever Keith, Chad Blinman.Audio Mixer: Chad Blinman.Recording information: Audio Intenational, Ojai, CA; The Eye Socket, Venice, CA.Unknown Contributor Roles: Peter Krpan; Erik Hughes; Chris Hughes. On its Vagrant debut, the Toronto quartet Moneen more fully indulges its mixture of emo dynamics with ambitious math rock songscapes. Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? is as musically grandiose as its lengthy title, die-cut packaging, and involved song titles and lyrics would suggest. Songs like “To Say Something That Means Nothing to Anyone at All” begin as a typical emo rocker, only to dissolve into an extended period of instrumental noodling. But the passage essentially becomes an extended bridge setting up a final, furious chorus. This is the drawback to Moneen’s larger-than-life sound: Though the band succeeds at expanding emo’s borders, it usually returns to the genre’s hallmarks before too long. Sweeping choruses; high-pitched, interlocking vocals; and crashing guitars abound on Are We Really Happy, even if most songs take a few minutes to slow things down, drop in piano, and generally pad the proceedings with melodrama. The quartet’s songs, voices, and playing are as tight as anything from veterans like the Get Up Kids or fellow newcomers such as hardcore/emo fusionists Silverstein. But in its zeal to reach great new heights in emo, Moneen ends up stalling out in simply good territory. The searching, often acerbic lyricisms; rousing melodies; and most of the album’s extended instrumental experiments should appeal to fans eager for something more than the same old heartbreak-married-to-ringing-guitars formula. But for Moneen itself, Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? might represent another few steps toward something truly exceptional. ~ Johnny Loftus |

There Is No Enemy [2LP/CD] [LP] $24.98 Indie rock stalwarts going back to the early 1990s, Built to Spill have pleased fans for years, and their first album in three years, THERE IS NO ENEMY, occupies much the same territory as 2006’s YOU IN REVERSE. Doug Martsch’s absorbed and witty wordplay consistently turns lyrical convention on its head, the songs feature a parade of quirky hooks, and with their driving, accomplished backing, the band draw in a range of potential audiences, from their indie fanbase to jam bands to singer/songwriters. Martsch makes a virtue of steadfastness and reflection, the single “Hindsight” bemoaning those who wonder, “Is the grass just greener ’cause it’s fake?” Besides connecting the dots between the chugging side of Neil Young and the slightly warped alternapop of the Flaming Lips, Built to Spill continue releasing some of the most affecting, beguiling indie rock of the 2000s. |
